Doors Open Waterloo 2019 features 43 sites has Water as the theme

(News Release)

WATERLOO REGION --Water is the theme of Doors Open Waterloo Region 2019 on Saturday, September 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There are 43 participating sites. Visit first-time sites and past favourites for their architecture, their heritage, or the interesting things going on. Some have all three!

WATER – Water is life. Water is local. Water circles the globe – a single, closed cycle. It is fundamental. Our past, our present, our future.

At 16 themed sites, explore the ways that water is at the centre of our lives. Indigenous water teachings, water treatment and distribution, watershed conservation and management, water research and science, natural areas and recreation, rivers, wastewater, flooding and floodplains, water efficiency in buildings, waterpower, bridges … all will be included in this year’s Doors Open Waterloo Region. Take in water-themed talks, walks, displays and activities.

Water-themed talks, walks, displays and activities will help you get your feet wet (sorry – we just had to say it). Look for this symbol in the site listings.

On the third Saturday of every September you're invited to tour noteworthy buildings, interesting places and heritage sites in Waterloo Region, many of which are not regularly open to the public. Admission is free!

Since 2003, more than 300 sites in Waterloo Region have opened their doors to more than 150,000 visits during Doors Open.

This year two very special events are planned for Doors Open Waterloo Region. Start the day off by observing a traditional Anishnaabe Water Ceremony, or sign up for an invitation to a secret “pop-up” concert presented by good company productions and hosted at one of the Doors Open participating sites throughout the day.

Details and etiquette for the Water Ceremony or how to sign up to attend the secret  pop-up concert can be found at the Special events link below.

Waterloo Region Forty-three sites, many of which are not regularly open to the public, will participate in the 17th annual Doors Open Waterloo Region (DOWR) on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

Hundreds of sites, thousands of volunteers, and thousands upon thousands of visitors have made Doors Open Waterloo Region a success since 2003. DOWR 2019 sites include both first-time participants and back-by-popular-demand favourites, selected for their architecture, heritage, technology, or for the interesting things going on inside. Some sites have all four!

Most sites are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but several have shortened hours, so visitors should carefully read the individual listings in the map/guide or on the Doors Open Waterloo Region website.

Admission is free.
