Ontario Naturalists' 'Blitz' Rouge Park - 24h BioBlitz
Friday, June 15th from 3:00 pm through
Saturday, June 16th at 3:00 pm
The best biologists
from across Ontario will converge on Rouge Park to document all living
things, from fungi to bats and from moss to Milksnakes. During an
intensive 24hr continuous period, over 150 scientists will race to
document biodiversity. The objective is to understand what life exists,
to find new species, and to showcase to the people of Toronto the
incredible ecosystem that is Rouge Park.
Start your day in a unique way at the Zoo!
Come to the Zoo before it opens for a special program and breakfast with our white lions or polar bears!
Families are invited to participate in this program
at the Zoo before the exhibit opens each day to the general public.
Program includes a complimentary morning snack, a presentation about the
animals with our experts, and an exclusive meet and greet with our
Wildlife keepers. CLICK HERE to register!
Cute Alert
BabirusaNot Just Another Pretty face!Take
a small creature with a pig like body, add long legs and a deer-like
profile, throw in a face full of tusks (one set of which curve upward
and end just outside the animal's eyes) and you have the amazingly odd -
but seriously cute - babirusa. Our babirusa baby was born on April 3,
2012 to mom Becky and dad Bucky. As babirusas are listed as vulnerable
in the wild, we're thrilled to have this new little one. The baby is on
display with its parents in the Indian rhino house near the Zoo's main
entrance.
CapybaraHow Very Odd!Despite
serious competition from the babirusa, the oddest animal at the Zoo is
unquestionably the capybara. It is the largest rodent in the world and
can weigh up to 100 pounds. This species comes from South America where
it enjoys swimming and grazes on grass - in groups - like cattle. We are
lucky to have three of these eccentric animals born on March 11, 2012
to Mom Lucy and Dad Brutus. You can marvel over them at the Capybara
exhibit in the Indo-Malayan paddocks.
