Toronto Zoo releases some 5,000 Puerto Rican crested toad tadpoles back Into the wild population

The Species Survival Plan (SSP) for the Puerto Rican crested toad was developed, in part, to reintroduce the species back into the wild. The Toronto Zoo has been an active participant in the breeding program for the past 30 years and we are delighted to announce that, 

on December 12, 2012, an estimated 25,659 Puerto Rican crested toad tadpoles, with over 5,000 from the Toronto Zoo, were successfully released in Los Conventos in the Southern part of Puerto Rico.

The Toronto Zoo is proud to be a part of such an important conservation initiative and to have been responsible for helping to sustain and rebuild the wild population of this endangered species. In addition to the captive breeding program, the Toronto Zoo also conducts research on the reproduction success of the Puerto Rican crested toad and the Toronto Zoo maintains a population of this species since its re-discovery in 2004.

This beautiful vibrate frog's name explains itself. The Blue poison dart frog has different shades of blue on its limbs, dorsal surface and ventral surface. The bright colour serves as a warning to would-be predators of its poisonous properties. The toxins within its skin that are capable of paralyzing or even killing potential predators. This colourful amphibian can be found on display in the America's Pavilion.
