Harbourfront Centre’'s newest waterfront experience

TORONTO -- Friday nights just got a whole lot tastier! Deep-fried goodness and sizzling tunes take over Toronto’s waterfront with Harbourfront Centre’s newest summer-long experience – DJ Deep Fried Fridays, from June 28 through to August 30 at 7 p.m.

Gather friends, pack up the kids and head down to Harbourfront Centre for an outdoor showcase that explores the tastes and sounds that reflect distant lands and local terrains.

DJ Deep Fried Fridays kicks off with Canada Day Weekend Celebrations, June 28. Tasty potato swirls are available for purchase at World Café while listening to the amazing sounds of Dr. Jay de Soca Prince on the Redpath Stage.

 
Throughout the summer, an array of music genres will be paired with tasty exotic treats such as Latin music with chifles (fried plantain chips), electronic beats with beavertails, reggae with festivals (a popular Jamaican fried dough), Korean pop music with samosas, and so much more.

At every DJ Deep Fried Friday, come experience the combination of food and music that reflect Harbourfront Centre’s cultural discourse every weekend throughout the summer season.

Deep-Fried Soca (part of Canada Day Weekend Celebrations) Friday, June 28 at 7 p.m.(Redpath Stage) The DJ: DJ Jay de Soca Prince
Dr. Jay de Soca Prince returns to Harbourfront Centre for our first-ever DJ Deep Fried Friday. Born in Toronto and raised in Trinidad, Dr. Jay takes his love of music, passion for soca and gratitude towards his fans and channels them into every performance he gives.

The Dish: Potato Swirls (Potato Tornadoes)
While you "wine" on some soca, "dine" on some deep-fried treats from Spring Rolls! The deep-fried potato swirl is a popular party favour for any occasion. Choose from the many different herbs and spices available to kick up this snack!

 
Deep-Fried Salsa (part of Rito y Color) Friday, July 5 at 7 p.m. (Redpath Stage) The DJ: DJ Jimmy Suave
Born in Santa Ana, El Salvador, DJ Jimmy Suave is one of Toronto’s most versatile and gifted DJs. With everything from contemporary Latin pop to classic salsa and cumbia, Suave is known to captivate his audience with the diversity of his music styles. Jimmy Suave is also the resident DJ of Lula Lounge.

The Dish: Chifles (deep-fried plaintain chips)
Paired with Suave’s performance are Chifles, an authentic South American snack prepared by Mis Amigos Catering. Chifles are plantains, thinly sliced, lightly fried in oil and sprinkled with salt.

 
Deep-Fried Dance Floor (part of SoundClash Festival) Friday, July 12 at 7 p.m.(Redpath Stage) The DJ: DJ Denise Benson
DJ Denise Benson has a talent for combining the past, present and future of electronic music and to produce soulful sounds known to please the audience. Benson’s party-rocker attitude has allowed her to produce a wide range of events and play at dozens of Toronto’s top venues over the past 20 years.

The Dish: Beaver Tails
While dancing to Denise Benson’s dynamite selections, grab a “SoundClash Special” - a hot and crispy beavertail pastry topped with a maple glaze and strips of crispy, salty bacon - the perfect "clash" of salty and sweet.

 
Deep-Fried Brass (part of Classical V: Brass) Friday, July 26 at 7 p.m.(Redpath Stage) The DJ: General Eclectic 
General Eclectic has worked hard over the past 14 years to build a reputation as one of Toronto’s best-loved DJs. In this performance, he is digging deep into his dusty, rusty crates to uncover some of the finest brass music from around the world.  

The Dish: Deep-Fried Risotto
Enjoy General Eclectic’s music selections with a side of deep-fried butternut squash or wild mushroom risotto. This mouth-watering delicacy from Gourmet on the Go features a satisfying crunch on the outside and delicate puffs of savory risotto on the inside.

 
Deep-Fried Reggae (part of Island Soul) Friday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m.(Redpath Stage) The DJ: Patrick Roots and DJ Chocolate
DJ Chocolate and DJ Patrick Roots come together, connecting their talents to create a positive reggae environment, bringing together Toronto’s communities.

The Dish: Deep-Fried Festivals
What better way to enjoy some real reggae music than with a true Jamaican deep-fried snack. Nates Palate serves up a delicious selection of cod or salt fish festivals – a common Jamaican treat.

 
Deep-Fried K-POP! (part of Fortune Cooking) Friday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. (Redpath Stage) The DJ: DJ Jaybe and VJ Gee of Pop! Goes the World!
These two high energy K-Pop stars bring Korean pop music to Harbourfront Centre. The wild and crazy party vibe, colourful costumes, fun choreography and video projections are sure to have you singing and dancing along.

The Dish: Samosa Chaat
This years Fortune Cooking features a twist of South Asian culture. Authentic Taste of India takes you on a journey to the streets of New Delhi with a tangy, sweet and popular Indian street food. Grab a deep-fried samosa chaat while you dance to the sounds of Pop! Goes the World!

 
Deep-Fried Mabuhay (part of Mabuhay! Philippines Festival) Friday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. (Redpath Stage) The DJ: Jrex the Decks 
At a very young age, Jrex the Decks learned that the musical path was the one for him. After learning piano, he taught himself guitar, bass guitar, drums and how to DJ. His passion and dedication to music will inspire you to get up and dance.

The Dish: Lumpia
Jrex the Decks takes the stage serving up a slice of musical love with a side of lumpia, Filipino style egg rolls that are sure to satisfy!

 
Deep-Fried Soca II (part of Hot & Spicy Food Festival) Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. (Redpath Stage) The DJ: Dr. Jay de Soca Prince
The first season of DJ Deep Fried Fridays closes with Dr. Jay de Soca Prince.

The Dish: French Caribbean Fritters
This stellar performance features a delicious deep-fried snack from French Caribbean restaurant Le Ti Colbri. Since salted fish and cod dishes are a specialty in the Caribbean, fish cakes will be made and served with plenty of pepper sauce for dipping.
