SoundClash Music Festival July 12 to 14, 2013 at Harbourfront Centre

An innovative music festival featuring performances from Born Ruffians, Chairlift, SoundClash Music Award finalists and more!

TORONTO, ON (June 10, 2013) –– Harbourfront Centre’s second annual SoundClash Music Festival (July 12-14) is an innovative music-based celebration that pushes envelopes and challenges perceptions about live music and digital music formats.

SoundClash Music Festival is one of the very few places that give undiscovered and emerging artists a platform to shine. This year’s festival highlights artists that embody Harbourfront Centre’s summer theme “terrain” – where the artists performing explore their roots while redefining the parameters of their genre or discipline.

SoundClash Festival highlights include:

• Performances from Toronto indie rockers Born Ruffians, urban-electro DJ/producer Boundary, American synthpop duo Chairlift, 10-piece groove masters Five Alarm Funk, orchestral dark-pop band The Belle Game and more;
• SoundClash Music Award finalists compete for the $10,000 in cash prizes;
• A DanceClash battle with international dance crews and DJs facing off for $1000;
• Workshops with important Canadian music industry insiders and artists;
• A FashionClash urban fashion show featuring local youth designers from UforChange and Remix project.

The SoundClash Music Festival is also home to the third annual SoundClash Music Award. Created in 2011 (the year prior to the festival’s creation), the SoundClash Music Award gives local, independent musicians from all backgrounds and genres the opportunity to play on Harbourfront Centre’s WestJet Stage, compete for three cash prizes totaling $10,000 and exclusive access to notable influencers in the Canadian music industry! This year's SoundClash Music Award winner also takes home a one-hour vocal consultation from Donna Flynn (vocalcoach.ca), one-hour music career development consultation from Musi Artist Development and a Music Ontario membership.

This year, nearly 350 applications were received from GTA musicians and after weeks of review, a jury comprised of Toronto’s foremost music authorities, created a shortlist from submissions received. Finalists are R&B singer and songwriter Brendan Philip, “Folkpoptronica” artist KASHKA (project of Kat Burns), Balkan and South-African jazz fusion band The Thing Is, Post-punk rockers Program, Folk-jazz trio The Jessica Stuart Few and indie pop band Grounders.

The winner of the SoundClash Music Award will be determined by a combination of jury selections and public votes following their performances on Saturday, July 13. Audiences can vote for their favourite contestant at harbourfrontcentre.com/soundclash. The winner of the SoundClash Music Award will be announced mid-August and will also perform at Harbourfront Centre’s Hot & Spicy Food Festival (Aug. 30-Sept. 2).
