The Horse and Buggy Trail opens for tasty tours in Holstein, ON

Township of Southgate ON – The award winning Horse and Buggy Trail launches its third season on June 14th in Holstein Park at 10 a.m. in Holstein Ontario.

There will be buggy rides, butter tarts and Chef Gary from Cedars Cottage Resort on Lake Eugenia cooking up Horse and Buggy Trail culinary delicacies.

Open to the public at 10:30 a.m. until noon, Misty Meadows Country Market, the Holstein General Store, Chef Gary Gingras and buggies from Carolyn Martin’s and Clayton Bearinger’s farms will demonstrate what can be found on the trail.

From quilts to wonderful solid wood furniture and kitchens, home-made breads, fresh local meats, delicious baking and fruit pies are found year-round.

More than a food trail, The Horse and Buggy Trail is a unique tour of tidy Mennonite farmsteads, old villages and historic country stores just a short trip from the GTA and southern Ontario.

It is a visit to where we all came from over a century ago when the villages were just a comfortable buggy ride away and where farm products were traded for mercantile store goods and comestibles.

“It is a peek into the special world of the Township of Southgate’s Mennonite community and a rural lifestyle reminiscent of the settlement of early Grey County, says Linda Reader project coordinator. " ... a chance to be immersed in another culture for a day."

The Horse and Buggy Trail is the only year-round farm gate tour that welcomes visitors into the one of a kind rural culture of a Mennonite community.”

NEW this year is an educational excursion by local Teacher David who will lead children and their families on a day of discovery. Visits include a family farm home and vegetable garden, a buggy factory, an old mill and a visit to a General Store for penny candy topped off with a short horse and buggy ride. 

Also NEW this year is Chef Gary’s cooking classes using the fall bounty from the trail in delicious dishes at his resort where overnight accommodation can be arranged. From maple syrup to ducks and amazing tunnel tomatoes, local food is a feature for sure.
