Busy weekend in store for Orillia Culture Days

Orillia is currently ranked 12th in the province out of 179 communities for the most Culture Days activities scheduled for this coming weekend.

With approximately 40 activities planned for Sept. 27-29, Orillia’s Culture Days is poised to be bigger and better than ever.

“Culture Days is a great opportunity to celebrate Orillia’s cultural riches and share them with others,” said Mayor Angelo Orsi. “I’d encourage residents to participate in the free Culture Days activities and discover how lucky we are to have these opportunities in our own backyard.”

Orillia Culture Days will feature activity hubs at the Orillia Opera House, the Orillia Museum of Art and History, the Orillia Public Library and throughout the Peter Street Arts District. An Orillia Culture Days schedule at a glance is attached to this news release and a more detailed scheduled can be found at www.on.culturedays.ca.

This weekend, sit down with Rodney Frost and learn how his whatchamacallits come to life or join one of the vocal ensemble's open-air rehearsals. Learn the art of storytelling and enjoy fascinating tales featured in the upcoming edition of Chicken Soup for the Soul. Whatever your passion, there is something for everyone.

“Culture Days connects activity organizers and artists with the public in a way that allows people to discover and experience the creative process. People will come away from the event with a better understanding of what is available within the city and how they might get involved,” said Jacqueline Sockza, the City’s Manager of Culture.

Since its launch in 2010, there has been a 47 per cent increase in registered activities nationally for the annual Culture Days weekend. An estimated 600,000 artists and cultural organizations voluntarily welcomed 1.6 million Canadians to their 7,000 registered Culture Days activities in 850 cities and towns across the country during the 2012 event. Culture Days represents the largest-ever collective public participation campaign undertaken by the arts and cultural community in Canada.

The City of Orillia is a city of 30,586 people in the heart of Central Ontario on the shores of Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe. Visit our website at orillia.ca.
