OH, CANADA! Harbourfront Centre releases festival lineup for Canada Day Extravaganza – June 27-July 1

Featuring over 60 events, 24 free concerts, 50 vendors, OLG Canada Eve Fireworks and more 
TORONTO, ON (June 3, 2014) – Today, Harbourfront Centre announced a birthday celebration of spectacular patriotic proportions with the release of the Canada Day Extravaganza lineup.
The festival, which runs June 27-July 1 in celebration of Canada Day and Harbourfront Centre’s 40th anniversary, boasts a diverse range of multidisciplinary celebratory festivities for patrons and patriots of all ages. From food to fireworks, music to movement, crafts to cupcakes and more, Harbourfront Centre invites the city of Toronto and its visitors to take part in an epic 5-day celebration of Canadian arts and creativity. 
 
Uniting visionary artists, thought-provoking ideas, multidisciplinary projects and Toronto’s diverse communities, this year’s Canada Day Extravaganza will mark a special moment in Harbourfront Centre’s history. In true anniversary spirit, the festival programming will explore the idea of legacy, looking at ideas surrounding what it means to be Canadian and how Harbourfront Centre has helped shape and shift ideas around Canadian identity in the last 40 years.

Thanks to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), Harbourfront Centre will once again present an extravagant 20-minute firework display, timed to music, along Toronto’s central waterfront. Fact! All air traffic along the harbour will be suspended for the duration of the fireworks.

The Toronto All-Star Big Band takes audiences swingin’ through the years, presenting a celebration of the sounds of swing through the decades and beyond. Dancers from Bees’ Knees Dance will lead a workshop to ensure audiences can follow their urges to move along to the music.

Formed in Guelph in 1991, King Cobb Steelie combines a variety of global sounds – dub, Afrobeat and more – with pop, punk and rock sensibilities to create a new sound that is socially and politically conscious. They have a long performing and recording career working with innovators like Bill Laswell, Steve Albini, Mad Professor & Guy Fixsen; in addition to celebrating the re-issue of 1994's critically acclaimed Project Twinkle, late 2013 saw the release of their first new material in nearly a decade.

The Kid Mitchell Band, put together by the iconic Canadian guitarist Kim Mitchell, began as a one-song contest. Since then, the band has blossomed into a full-on rock band celebrating all that is classic in rock while aiming to create new classics.

The Remix Project helps under-served youth enter into the creative industries, and their Academy of Recording Arts turns out tomorrow’s turntablists. One graduate of the program, DJ Yobi and two current participants, DJ Lewy V and DJ Kelsey Wu, traverse the decades on the decks providing a soundtrack to celebrate the past, and next 40 years. 
 
Sundown @ 40: A Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot with Tom Wilson and Friends

In 1974, Gordon Lightfoot's Sundown was released, and, with the title track and "Carefree Highway" leading the way, it marked the first time that Lightfoot topped both the Canadian and American charts. The 40th anniversary of Lightfoot's most commercially-successful album is a great opportunity to celebrate the ultimate Canadian songwriter's legacy. Tom Wilson, of LeE HaRVEY OsMOND, leads the celebration with an all-star cast including: Ron Sexsmith, Dan Romano, Jory Nash, Jacob Moon, Harlan Pepper and more!

Shauit credits his thirst for discovery for powering his musical journey, which has seen him engaged in celebrating his heritage and traditions while bringing them forward into a new era.

Though Tuareg guitar was forbidden by authorities, the self-taught Bombino was encouraged by his family to study the instrument. His passion and interest in music, ranging from Ali Farka Toure to Jimi Hendrix, brought him regional and international success. Based in the traditional Niger music with which he grew up, Bombino’s interest in blues and rock has brought the tradition into the 21st Century and has created a truly unique sound. His 2013 Nonesuch Records debut, Nomad, was produced by Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) and debuted atop both the Billboard World Music chart and the iTunes World chart, while garnering rave reviews around the world.

Dancers from That Swing! will perform traditional and progressive swing to original jazz and electro swing. The Charleston was the dance craze of the 1920s. Performed by dames and dappers alike, this high-flying dance was the tops for the Roaring 20s and Prohibition eras. The Lindy Hop, or Jitterbug, is an American dance that evolved in Harlem, New York City in the 1920s and 1930s and originally evolved with the jazz music of that time. Lindy is a fusion of many dances that preceded it and is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway and Charleston.

World’s Largest Round Dance

As part of the Canada Day celebrations, Harbourfront Centre wants to invite everyone to come down to the site to attempt a world record for the world’s Largest Round Dance.  The round dance is a social dance of many Indigenous Nations throughout North America and local drummers/singers will be providing the music for this world record attempt.  Throughout the weekend we will be holding practice runs with anyone who is interested in participating as we build up to the big finale on Canada Day.

Ben, a risk-averse, slow-to-act, quiet man buys a used motorcycle and says goodbye to Samantha, his baffled fiancée, and heads west from Toronto. One Week chronicles Ben’s motorcycle trip as he rides from Toronto to Tofino, British Columbia. Ben stops at landmarks that are both iconic and idiosyncratic on his quest to find meaning in his life.

Dundas Pipes and Drums

The Dundas Pipes and Drums were founded in 1947 by returning veterans. Over its long history, the band has participated in many competitions, parades, concerts and tattoos. Since its inception, the band has maintained high standards of piping, drumming and teaching, bringing the traditions and love of Highland music to the community.  On Canada Day, treat your eardrums to a variety of Traditional Scottish marches, retreats, airs and strathspeys, as well as some Canadian favourites!
 
HMCS Marching Brass Band

Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship YORK Band was formed in 1943 and is one of five Naval Reserve Bands in Canada. The band performs concerts, parades and many dinner and social events throughout the year. This Band is an integral part of its ship’s company, providing musical support for the Canadian Forces. Join us as the band plays O Canada and other popular Canadian tunes around the site.

MaracaTALL is a high energy, high impact stilt-walking drum core that can be seen and heard over 100 metres away. This lively troupe is guaranteed to bring joy and amazement to Ann Tindal Park. With colourful costumes, choreography, and traditional Maracatu drums, MaracaTALL raises afro-Brazilian rhythms to new heights!
 
MM Robinson Marching Band

The MM Robinson Drumline started 7 years ago as small group of students who met in the cafeteria and practiced on drum pads. Today, the drumline has grown to include over 30 members. The MM Robinson Drumline also performs in Competitions in Canada and the US; they currently hold the title of Ontario Provincial Champion.

40 years ago, Wonder Mike and Master Gee helped bring hip-hop to the mainstream with the release of “Rapper’s Delight,” the first commercially successful hip-hop single. Following this in 1989, Canada’s first commercially successful hip-hop single “Let Your Backbone Slide” was released by Toronto’s first rap superstar Maestro Fresh Wes. Around the same time, Much Music launched Soul in the City and Rap City, two shows hosted by Michael Williams. Join Wonder Mike, Master Gee, Maestro Fresh Wes and Michael Williams for an intimate discussion on the legacy of hip-hop.
