Summer in the city -- Toronto -- a hot time

   Hot town, summer in the (big) city.
   Toronto is bursting with activities and a summer escape here “offers experiences you won’t find anywhere else,” said Vanessa Somarriba of Tourism Toronto.
    To help plan that getaway, she suggests the following attractions, events and performances.

   Zip through the zoo
   - Toronto Zoo’s latest attraction opening this summer is Tundra Air, a zipline ride that soars over the Tundra Trek, giving views of animals including Arctic wolves, polar bears and caribou.
   Don’t forget to visit Humphrey, the polar bear cub, and Er Shun and Da Mao, the Chinese pandas. torontozoo.com
Ripley’s Aquarium
   - Ripley’s Aquarium beside the CN Tower is Canada’s largest indoor facility of its kind with 15,000 aquatic animals and a huge underwater viewing tunnel. There are some 100 interactive opportunities including three touch pools with horseshoe crabs, sharks and rays. ripleyaquariums.com/Canada

EdgeWalk at the CN Tower
   - CN Tower’s EdgeWalk is for those wanting to live life on the edge or ledge hanging off at the top. There’s also the glass floor, outdoor SkyTerrace, Himalamazon, a motion theatre ride, and the sky-high revolving 360 Restaurant. cntower.ca
   - The Ontario Science Centre explores the Science of Rock ‘n’ Roll in an interactive exhibition that provides a fresh look at the history of rock from the perspective of science and technology. ontariosciencecentre.ca
   - Legoland Discovery Centre lets visitors create, explore 4-D cinema, experience three-million bricks and see Toronto’s iconic attractions made out of Lego. legolanddiscoverycentre.ca/toronto
   - The Art Gallery of Ontario features some 130 works of Francis Bacon and Henry Moore, two giants of 20th-century British art. From Aug. 23, there will be about 100 works by the late Toronto-born artist Alex Colville. ago.net
   - The Royal Ontario Museum features the Forbidden City with national treasures from Beijing's Palace Museum, some appearing outside China for the first time. rom.on.ca

   Cirque for the curious

   - Cirque du Soleil returns to Toronto with KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities, opening Aug. 28.
   It leaves the audience wondering if it’s real or a figment of their imagination in this blend of “unusual curiosity acts and stunning acrobatic prowess.” cirquedusoleil.com
DockDogs at the Waterfront Festival
   - It’s party time at the Redpath Waterfront Festival from June 20 to 22 with the Flyboard North American Championships, DockDogs World Qualifying Championships and fun on and off the water. towaterfrontfest.com
   - Harbourfront Centre is packed with activities including diverse musical and arts performances, Yogapalooza and a spectacular fireworks show on “Canada Eve.” harbourfrontcentre.com
   - Mirvish Productions has a line-up of fan-favourites including the Lion King, Flashdance and Titanic the Musical. mirvish.com

   Eat, dance, groove
   - Summerlicious, July 4 to 20, offers diners an opportunity to explore the city’s variety of cuisine with three-course prix fixe menus at 200 top restaurants, cooking classes and demonstrations, dinner theatre, tastings, pairings and chef dinners. toronto.ca/summerlicious
   - Caribbean Carnival (formerly Caribana), a festival of music, cuisine and visual and performing arts, happens July 8 to Aug. 3. torontocaribbeancarnival.com
   - Taste of Toronto at Fort York National Historic Site, July 24 to 27, will have specially created menus and opportunities to meet top chefs, food demonstrations, cooking classes, wine tastings and live music. tasteoftoronto.com

   - Continuing until Sunday is the Luminato Festival, an international multi-arts event in theatres, parks and public spaces. luminatofestival.com
   - North by Northeast Music and Film Festival, now to June 22, highlights emerging artists and major-label headliners, filmmakers, comedians and innovators bridging the gap between technology and the arts. nxne.com
   - TD Toronto Jazz Festival, June 19 to 28, presents more than 350 concerts across 40 locations with 1,500 musicians. torontojazz.com
    - Digital Dreams, June 28 and 29, is an electronic music festival set on the Lake Ontario shoreline. digitaldreamsfest.ca

   Need to know
