The cultural legacy of the Caribbean comes to Harbourfront Centre’s Island Soul festival – August 1 to 4

Make your summer experience complete by connecting with the Caribbean in the heart of Toronto’s waterfront

TORONTO, ON – The wildly popular Island Soul festival returns to Harbourfront Centre August 1 to 4 (2014) for its annual four-day celebration of Caribbean music, dance, film, art, games and more. Visitors are invited to explore island traditions and celebrate the continuance of Caribbean soul from one generation to the next.

Island Soul offers a diverse, multidisciplinary programme informed by the stories that have sustained and inspired generations of communities who call these island nations home.

The festival features diverse artistic expressions, independent voices and thinkers who have created a rich legacy and who continue to influence island culture today. Revelers of all ages can enjoy the rich artistic and cultural offerings of countries and communities of the Caribbean islands, including the widely-anticipated performance by Edwin Yearwood and Krosfyah.

Island Soul also features top Canadian and international calypso, reggae and soca musicians including Marcia Griffiths, Joy Lapps, and Calypso Stars. On Sunday August 3, Festival Kompa Zouk Ontario returns to Island Soul, celebrating the diversity of the Creole cultures of the Caribbean; and on Monday August 4 festival patrons celebrate the cultural heritage of Tobago, supported by the Tobago Tourism and Transportation.
“The Caribbean may be one of the most multicultural places on earth. These islands have a culturally rich legacy that informs arts practices in their own backyard as well as globally,” explains Harbourfront Centre guest artistic associate Nadine McNulty. “Island Soul always strives to be a meeting place for communities to express and explore their unique identities. This year, Island Soul features diverse artistic expressions, independent voices and thinkers. We’re looking at those who have influenced the past and present and also to those will no doubt impact the future of Caribbean island culture throughout our programming.”

In a genre traditionally dominated by male artists, Marcia Griffiths is arguably the best-known and most influential woman in the history of reggae. Griffiths first made a name for herself when the music was still evolving from its roots in ska and rocksteady, and she later became an ally of reggae's signature artist, Bob Marley, before embracing the electronic-based sounds of dancehall and funk in the 1980s.

House of David Gang

House of David Gang is an uplifting Canadian reggae band that draws on the roots sounds of 1970’s Kingston, Jamaica. Gerard Balfour started his musical conquest at the tender age of eight under the tutelage of his sister Anthea Balfour. The first song he learned on Trinidad & Tobago's national Instrument was "Falling In Love" by UB40. This intrigued him and he committed to learning more about the steelpan and the theoretical aspect of music. Ricardo Seales is currently employed as a music instructor under the Division of Education Youth Affairs and Sports. This year (2014), Gerard teamed up with fellow Tobagon Ricardo Seales to form the band, Cadence. The Afropan Steelband “the people’s band” is Toronto’s oldest and most successful steelband. The pioneers of Afropan, an intimate group of pannists from Trinidad, got together in Toronto as early as 1970. Since 1973 Afropan, under the leadership of Earl La Pierre Sr., has won the Best Playing Steelband Competition at the Caribana Festival a total of 28 times, and has ranked in the top three on all other occassions.

Legends of Ska

Legends Of Ska celebrates the music, culture and enthusiasm of Jamaica as a newly independent nation more than 50 years ago. The film chronologically explores the history of the times and the island’s musical impact worldwide. In the spirit of the Buena Vista Social Club and 20 Feet From Stardom, this documentary focuses primarily on the years 1962-1966 by interspersing vintage and contemporary concert footage, authentic tourist 8mm home movies, photographs, newsreels, artifacts and rare interviews, all of which illuminate the facts and myths surrounding the music. Ska was Jamaica’s first popular musical export, which sprang from the jazz clubs and dancehalls of Kingston to spawn a worldwide dance craze. Without Ska, there is no Reggae.

The Moko Jumbie is a "diviner" figure, rooted in African heritage and adapted in Trinidad, who wears colourful garb and a carnival mask, watching over his village and able to foresee danger and evil. This hands-on workshop is an elementary introduction to the traditions of Moko Jumbie (stilt-dancing spirit of the forest). Originating as a secret society of village guardians, Moko Jumbies are now featured in carnival and cultural presentations around the world, still inspiring awe and wonder. Using specially designed short training stilts sized for children, two senior instructors will lead a stilt-dancing workshop.

Since 1973, it works to emphasize all the resources of the Haitian culture combining dance, songs, rhythm and literature of African, Haitian and West-Indian background. Throughout the years, the group performed in Quebec, United States and Europe.

SwizzleStick Theatre animates the site with Moko Jumbie stilt dancers. The Moko Jumbie is a ‘diviner’ figure, rooted in African heritage and adapted in Trinidad, who wears colourful garb and a carnival mask, watching over his village and able to foresee danger and evil.

Rara Soley, drawing in ancestral traditions, promotes and preserves traditional Haitian culture, a rich heritage of ancestral rhythms and songs directly from the Voodoo tradition. Its music features rich and unique new sounds where tanbou the vaksin the graj, the tcha-tcha and voices produce music that touches the soul and providing an electric and therapeutic atmosphere of great intensity, where ancestral spirits do not hesitate to come forward!
