INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS STORY OF CRITICALLY ENDANGERED FISH
Since 2004, the Toronto Zoo has been part of a conservation program for Madagascar fishes. This past September, our Wildlife Care Keeper Tim McCaskie returned from another successful field season in Madagascar to establish sustainable populations of endangered fish in the wild.

In 2013, Tim worked with the extremely rare and once thought to be extinct Ptychochromis insolitus, a small perch-like f...ish. We are proud to announce that upon Tim’s trip back to Madagascar this past year, the fish collected were successfully breeding in a protected Madagascar conservation facility. During his field season, he also discovered another species, what could be the critically endangered rainbowfish, the Rheocles derhami, or a new species.
A small number of these rare species of fish from Madagascar were brought to the Toronto Zoo in September, and we are the only accredited facility internationally to have a living population of these species.

In wake of the chilly fall weather, this months Enrichment Extravaganza will be in our Africa Rainforest pavilion with our Radiated Tortoises!

These tortoises can live to be up to 50 years old, however they are critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching for pet trade. Join us at 1:30 pm every Saturday in November to learn more about this amazing creature and watch them receive their special enrichment. Plus, our keepers will be on hand to answer any of your questions.
