Family Day and Valentine getaways at Ontario Parks

(News Release)

February is a popular month to visit Ontario Parks. Six provincial parks plan Family Day events and affordable Valentine getaways in roofed accommodation at many parks are a big draw. Valentine’s Day and Family Day are on the same holiday weekend this year, February 13-16.

While holiday weekend accommodation is already booked, mid-week dates are still available. A total of twenty-six parks across Ontario are open this winter. Eight have roofed accommodation for rent.

Nineteen have groomed ski trails and snowshoeing and several offer skating, tobogganing and tubing. The Ontario Parks Ski Report has the latest trail conditions. This Park Blog snowshoe post includes parks with designated trails. For more on Family Day events and Valentine getaways, please see below.

Family Day events are planned for Algonquin, Killarney, Bronte Creek, Pinery and MacGregor Point Provincial Parks. Algonquin’s “Winter in the Wild” (February 14) will have indoor and outdoor activities, including an evening hike and wolf howl. A highlight of MacGregor Point’s two-day Snofest will be a mini Family Winter Triathlon (February 14-16).

The Pinery’s Family Day activities will focus on park wildlife from tiny predators to Great Horned Owls (February 14-16). Killarney’s Activity Days include winter photography lessons and stargazing in the park’s own observatory (February 14-15) and at Bronte Creek (February 16), there will be skating on the Olympic-sized outdoor rink, craft-making and the Play Barn will be open all day.

Most Family Day activities are free with a park permit. Detailed information and links are in this Family Day Park Blog post at http://www.parkreports.com/parksblog/?p=6823 and it’s always helpful to check out the events section of the Ontario Parks’ website.

Heated yurts, cabins, cottages, a four-bedroom farmhouse and even a park lodge can be rented for a Valentine getaway. This Park Blog post on winter hideaways describes some of the choices available. Online reservations are available for most roofed accommodation.

Sometimes a Valentine getaway can lead to a park wedding. This Park Blog post reveals some of Ontario Parks’ favourite wedding locations.

Further winter park information is found on the Ontario Parks web site at https://www.ontarioparks.com/winter.
