Canada Day festivities celebrate the next generation of Canadian artists

(News Release)

TORONTO, ON - Canada Day: The Next Generation continues Harbourfront Centre's iconic celebration of our nation's birthday. Looking at the next wave of Canadian arts and culture, visitors can experience a tremendously diverse and exciting day of activities, music and food.

From celebrating the 25 th anniversary of By Divine Right, to the 40th anniversary of The Hustle, grooving to the shifting Andalusian, Berber and Reggae rhythms, Ra and Latin melodies of Ayrad, being immersed in the Sounds Like Canada music series, or just enjoying a birthday cupcake or maple treat with visiting Mounties, there is something for everyone in the day-long revelry of Canada's 148th birthday.

"We ask through a variety of programming, 'What is Canadian?' We ask what it means today, what it has meant in the past, and what it will mean going forward," explains Umair Jaffar, Artistic Associate. "Harbourfront Centre's Canada Day celebrates the various facets that make Canada and Toronto in particular, one of the most diverse places on the planet, and ponders what that means for Canada Days to come."

Canada Day: The Next Generation - Highlights at a Glance:
Music: Divine @ 25 - Celebrating the 25th anniversary of indie-rockers By Divine Right (BDR) with a concert on the WestJet Stage, featuring original members and peers from the music industry. Dance: The popular disco-era dance, The Hustle, is celebrating its 40th anniversary and the audience is invited to shake their tail feathers en masse to the music of After Funk.

Food: The Mad for Maple Food Competition challenges top chefs from around GTA to create the ultimate baked goodie with Canada's unofficial favourite flavour, maple. Family: The Maple Leaf Families series features a swath of programming as diverse as Canada itself, from Japanese-Canadian storytelling, musical petting zoo, and grooves from Latin America.
