One-Tank Trip for Oct. 12/19
(c) By Jim Fox
Niagara is
one of the final places in Ontario to view the fall kaleidoscope of colours.
The
region, lying between Lake Erie to the south and Lake Ontario to the north,
is in the moderate climate zone.
That means there’s
still time to take in the spectacle of the changing season.

Niagara offers some
special spots to see fall colours on jet boats, a Ferris wheel and at a conservation
area.
This is where
you’ll find the Niagara Parkway curving along the Niagara River separating
Canada and the United States.
It was called “the
prettiest Sunday drive in the world” by the late British Prime Minister Sir
Winston Churchill.
On the roadway between
Niagara-on-the-Lake and Table Rock in Niagara Falls, there’s a stunning burst
of colours reaching their peak later this month.
The Table Rock
Welcome Centre is a retail and observation complex at the brink of the Canadian
Horseshoe Falls.
Other diversions
are relaxing at one of the many wineries and craft beer establishments in the
area and watching water cascading over the two falls.

It’s always a good
time in the falls but even more so now with leaves aflame in autumn colors.
Top five spots
Here’s a tourist
list of the top spots around Niagara Falls to take in the fall foliage.
Niagara Sky Wheel
Soaring more than
50 metres above Niagara Falls, the Niagara Sky Wheel on Clifton Hill in Niagara
Falls gives riders a breathtaking panoramic view of the fall colours.
Operating
year-round, there are views of both sides of the Niagara River and gorge, the
Horseshoe and American falls, Niagara Parks and other landmarks. cliftonhill.com/attractions
Beamer Memorial Conservation Area
Perched on the edge
of the Niagara Escarpment above Grimsby, this area offers one of Niagara’s most
breath-taking and panoramic views of the area.
The view stretches
from the gateway to Niagara in the west to beyond the Canada-U.S. border in the
east.
It’s a popular spot
for hikers and birdwatchers, with several great spots to take in the beauty of
the escarpment in fall, including scenic look-outs and a bird-watching tower. npca.ca/parks/beamer-memorial
Observe the fall colours from above the Niagara Gorge in the Aero Car. |
Whirlpool Aero Car
The historic
Whirlpool Aero Car has been soaring over the Niagara Gorge since 1916.
The antique cable
car is suspended from six sturdy cables and offers spectacular views of the
swirling Niagara whirlpool and the white-water rapids of the Niagara River.
Although the car travels
between two points on the Canadian shore, riders actually cross the
international border line four times each trip due to the way the river elbows.

Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours
Whirlpool Jet Boat
Tours continues taking passengers on trips through the turbulent white waters
of the Niagara River until the end of October.
The wet-and-wild
adventure gives passengers one-of-a-kind views of the Niagara Gorge.
At this time of
year, they are flanked with forests of vibrant red, orange and yellow foliage.
Brock’s Monument National Historic Site
This towers over
picturesque and historic Queenston Heights Park with great views of the
colourful canopy below and the Niagara Gorge.
The 56-metre-high
monument is on the site of the Battle of Queenston Heights where British
and American soldiers fought for the destiny of two nations in the War of 1812.
It’s the final
resting place of Major-Gen. Sir Isaac Brock and his Aide-de-Camp Lieut.Col.
John Macdonell.
During the summer,
visitors can climb the 235 steps to the top of the monument while the park
remains open throughout the year. friendsoffortgeorge.ca/brocks-monument
