They’re gonna party
like it’s 1999 – make that 2020 – in Niagara Falls for the bash of the year,
both of them.
Ringing in the New
Year with the backdrop of the falls has been a popular family event on the eve
of the advancing calendar year.
The free party in
Queen Victoria Park on the Niagara Parkway has performances by singer Bryan
Adams, Walk Off the Earth and local pop star Valerie Borghesi.

Hosted in
partnership with the City of Niagara Falls, the outdoor event from 8:30 p.m. to
12:15 a.m. features two fireworks displays.
Entertainment and
the first fireworks over the falls at 9:15 p.m. are for the benefit of kids and
others who can’t make it to the awaited midnight hour.
The fireworks are released
from the gorge and the Skylon Tower.
There will also be
a liquor-licensed area and variety of dining options.
It all happens in
the midst of the Winter Festival of Lights until Jan. 12 from Ontario Power
Generation that is being called the “brightest season yet.”
It takes place
along an eight-kilometre route through the Niagara Parks, Dufferin Islands and
surrounding tourist districts that have become a winter wonderland.
More than
one-million people turn out to view the spectacle annually, said Niagara Parks.
The lights include
the iconic Zimmerman Fountain, 15 three-dimensional Canadian wildlife displays,
the world’s largest Canadian-U.S. flag and Noah’s Ark.

There are also the
lights atop the Skylon Tower, 50 trees wrapped with lights in the Dufferin
Islands and the Toronto Power Generating Station light show.
Special events
include fireworks, now daily through Dec. 31,and the nightly illumination of
the falls.
Visitors can stay
warm with WEGO, the hop-on, hop-off visitor transportation system, that
connects Niagara Parks’ locations with hotels and key destinations in the falls.
There are “warm-up
WEGO buses” in front of Queen Victoria Place for visitors to escape from the elements.

All aglow
- The Royal
Botanical Gardens in Burlington is holding Winter Lights at the Rock Garden.
The event with
thousands of festive lights runs from Fridays to Sundays through Jan. 5 as well
as Dec. 23, 30 and Jan. 2.

This winter
wonderland includes the Escarpment Train, “festive sips and bites” and music.
There is also the
Botanical Train display that features railway models among Canadian landmarks
and the RBG Express that takes up to 20 riders. rbg.ca

annual Cavalcade of Lights is burning brightly, highlighted by the illumination

That’s where the
big New Year’s Eve party will be held along with DJ skating parties, musical
performances and fireworks. Admission is free for this all-ages, alcohol-free
