Celebrate paddling on National Canoe Day

(News Release)
See Canada by canoe, it's a natural thing to do

Toronto, June 6, 2011 - Canadians from coast to coast are invited to participate in the fourth annual National Canoe Day on or around June 26, 2011. Veteran paddlers and those new to canoeing alike can join in the festivities by hosting a community event, a backyard 'Canoebeque' with friends and neighbours, or simply going for a paddle.

"Experiencing Canada by canoe allows you to see thisCCM logo country and the great outdoors in a way that you might not otherwise," said James Raffan, Executive Director of the Canadian Canoe Museum, "National Canoe Day encourages everyone from the paddlesports community and beyond to keep this part of our national heritage alive for future generations."

Thousands of people nationwide participated in National Canoe Day 2010 by going for a paddle, hosting and attending events, or starting a conversation about their canoeing experiences with their friends and family.

Two signature events will kick off this year's festivities on June 25; in Peterborough, Ontario, the Canadian Canoe Museum welcomes one and all to a day of paddling, music and food, culminating in a paddling procession through the world-famous hydraulic lift lock, led by the museum's 12-paddler North Canoe. In Caledonia, Ontario, you can start a river journey on A Day of 1,000 Canoes - A Grand River Canoe Festival. The Canadian Canoe Museum will offer free admission all day on June 26th.

About National Canoe Day
In 2007, the canoe was named one of the Seven Wonders of Canada via a CBC Radio feature in which over 1 million votes were cast. In celebration of this, the Canadian Canoe Museum founded NCD with the aim of increasing participation in paddlesports in Canada, engaging new paddlers and reaching across generational and cultural divides to introduce the canoe to those who haven't had the opportunity to experience this great national heritage. In the intervening years, NCD has grown to become a truly countrywide event, with participants paddling across the country, from the midnight sun of the north to the urban rivers of the south.

About The Canadian Canoe Museum
The Canadian Canoe Museum is a unique national heritage centre that explores the canoe's enduring significance to the peoples of Canada. Experience the world's largest collection of canoes, kayaks and paddled watercraft and learn how the canoe has defined the Canadian character and spirit. Spanning the country from coast to coast to coast, the museum's outstanding artifacts will let you see Canada by canoe.
