Fairmont Royal York "goes out on a limb" with the Urban Forest getaway package

(News Release)

TORONTO, June 9, 2011—Backed by poplar demand, Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York hotel sets root with its sister properties around the globe, in tribute to UNESCO’S 2011 International Year of Forests designation. The hotel now offers an overnight stay paired with a walking tour of neighbouring urban trees with expert arborist, Kent Nielsen. Rates begin at $259 CAD and travellers may leave for the URBAN FOREST any Friday or Saturday, now through to December 30, 2011.

Since The Fairmont Royal York’s opening in 1929, the City of Toronto has grown up around the landmark hotel.  Still, the surrounding trees could never have grown as tall as many of today’s surrounding buildings. This new package stems from Fairmont Hotels & Resorts’ decades-long commitment to combining responsible tourism and environmental stewardship. The Urban Forest package doesn’t pine for trees lost or decry urbanization, but instead celebrates the diversity and benefits of trees in Toronto’s downtown core.

It is estimated that nearly 20 per cent of the City of Toronto is covered by trees. At 12:00 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, arborist Kent Neilsen departs from the hotel lobby counting one, two, tree and takes guests of the Urban Forest package to see a sampling of these urban trees. The tour winds along streets of The Financial District and into neighbouring parks to discover roots, bark and stems of the city’s green canopy.  Upon return to the hotel, guests are offered a 2:00 p.m. garden tour and a bird’s eye view of the trees below from the vantage point of the hotel’s rooftop garden and apiary.

Urban Forest Package Includes:
·        One night accommodation in a Fairmont Room
·        A walking tour of Toronto's foliage with an expert arborist
·        A tour of the hotel's rooftop garden
·        An Ontario fruit amenity to your room
·        A $10 donation to Tree Canada

With this package, a stay benefits the environment - for every Urban Forest package booked, The Fairmont Royal York will donate $10 to Tree Canada. Tree Canada is a not-for-profit charitable organization established to encourage Canadians to plant and care for trees in urban and rural environments.
