Toronto Zoo celebrates International Polar Bear Day

Toronto, Ontario: Toronto Zoo is a leader in polar bear conservation and is a champion for Canada's threatened majestic species and is hosting its annual Polar Bear Festival on Saturday, February 28 and Sunday, March 1, 2015. This is in celebration of International Polar Bear Day, February 27th.
Toronto Zoo is involved in collaborative research projects with multiple accredited zoos and organizations to help better understand polar bear reproductive biology, nutrition and behaviour studies to provide valuable information to support polar bear education, research and conservation efforts both at the Zoo and in the wild. Some of these organizations include Polar Bears International (PBI), Parks Canada, the North American Polar Bear Species Survival Plan (SSP), and Acres for the Atmosphere.
Over the two days, polar bears will be taking over the Panda Interpretive Centre from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and visitors will be able to take part in 'cool' fun and educational activities that help to educate, raise awareness, and support this threatened Canadian species.

Polar Bear Fest will include ‘Meet the Polar Bear Keeper’ talks with ice treats, polar bear themed children’s activities and crafts (indoors!), a special presentation on Saturday, February 28, by Brandon Laforest, who researches polar bears in the wild, silent auction with a chance to win a Keeper-for-a-Day experience or Behind-the-Scenes Tour, and much more! Event is free with Zoo admission.
And that's not all! The Zoo is hosting the 2nd Annual Move Your Paws For The Polar Bear Cause 1K & 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, February 28th. Join the cause and move YOUR paws to help one of the world's most vulnerable species! Open to all runners, walkers and fitness folk of all ages and abilities. Bundle up and bring the whole family for a day of outdoor fun, fitness and fundraising. All proceeds raised from the event go towards Polar Bear Conservation! Support the Toronto Zoo and polar bears and invite your friends, family and colleagues to pledge a participant.
Polar bears are a threatened species and the Toronto Zoo’s breeding program works closely with other Zoological associations and conservation institutions. It is estimated that there are, approximately, 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears in the wild and around 60% of those living in Canada.
“The knowledge gained from our efforts with polar bears in our care provides the necessary foundation for understanding polar bears and their plight in the wild and gives field researchers the tools to assist them in creating conservation plans to help save this iconic species in the wild,” says Maria Franke, Curator of Mammals, Toronto Zoo. “By coming out to the Zoo and participating in events including Polar Bear Fest and Move Your Cause For the Polar Bear Cause 1K & 5K Walk/Run you are doing your part to support polar bear conservation."

The Plastic Bag Polar Bear

Made from hundreds of recycled plastic bags, this polar bear serves as a reminder that our actions are impacting the environment. Plastics, including shopping bags, take more than 1,000 years to degrade and are filling the oceans where polar bears live.

You can help protect polar bears and other wildlife found in oceans and lakes by:
  • Reducing your use of plastic bags - Use a reusable bag instead!
  • Reusing plastic bags and containers
  • Recycling plastic where possible
Together, we can make a difference!
