One Tank Trips: Sustainable 'Green' and Earth Day events planned at the Toronto Zoo

Each year in April the Toronto Zoo hosts Earth Day Celebrations. The objective of this event is to raise awareness for a sustainable planet earth and to provide actions and activities that will encourage stewardship. Taking place within the award winning Tundra Trek, the event showcases specifically selected organizations that are champions in environmental conservation stewardship in Ontario and promote green ideas from organizations from across Ontario. The Earth Day Celebrations promote renewable energy, sustainable living and the fact that every single person can have an impact on climate change for a better planet. This year's event on, April 25 and 26, 2015, will showcase the important work by the Toronto Zoo's Wildlife Health Centre in helping to maintain a healthy population of wildlife around the Greater Toronto Area.

The Toronto Zoo also offers a program directed towards Senior Management in the business community called ECOexecutives. This program provides a unique, inspiring and motivating setting to help transition an organization's sustainability goals to the next level. The program can customize workshops to suit each organization's individual needs. Also we offer exclusive animal tours to further emphasize the connection between sustainable business choices and biodiversity protection, and a roaster of experienced sustainable business professionals to facilitate and mentor attendees.

The Zoo participates in a number of other sustainable events throughout the year including Earth Hour and the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. The Toronto Zoo is committed to renaturalizing the Zoo property with tree and meadow plantings.

A healthy, clean planet creates healthy animals, plants and people. Celebrate Earth Day at the Toronto Zoo and find out through the eyes of the veterinarians and technicians at the Zoo, how they work towards a healthy wildlife population in Toronto. Through hands-on activities learn about the impact of climate change on the ability of wild animals and spaces to stay healthy.

Learn how groups around Ontario are working together to ensure our environment is healthy in order to sustain life and how new technologies designed to reduce climate change is creating safer and healthier spaces for us.

The Toronto Zoo is Celebrating National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week (April 12-April 18) is a time to recognize over 13 million volunteers Canada-wide that contribute their time and support to a variety of organizations. “Volunteers are part of the ripple effect” is the theme of this year’s campaign. A stone thrown in a lake has a direct impact and creates many ripples. Like these ripples, through the individual and collective contributions of the Toronto Zoo Volunteers, the Zoo is able to bring our conservation message and voice far and wide within our community. Last year, Toronto Zoo Volunteers made close to 780,000 contacts and contributed approximately 32,000 hours of service to the Zoo.

Earth Day Massasauga Rattlesnake Workshop

Each year, the Toronto Zoo hosts rattlesnake workshops for the people who share habitats with rattlesnakes near their homes and cottages, and where they work and play. Learn how to identify the massasauga rattlesnake and after lunch meet a live rattlesnake. Space is limited. We suggest you bring a lunch or eat at Zoo restaurants. Please note that the program length may be too long for children under eight years of age. For a $5 donation you will receive snacks, educational fun, resources to take home and time to visit our interactive massasauga rattlesnake area on the Zoo site.
