ST. MARYS, Ontario
-- Wellness for Seniors will celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday with an exercise
class with at least 150 people taking part.
Participant Nelda
Oliver said the Senior Services Wellness Coordinator and Head Fitness
instructor will have the seniors participate in the exercise class on June 29th
(2017) with everyone wearing red or white shirts for Canada Day.
The event takes
place next Thursday at 10:45 a.m. at the Friendship Centre, 317 James St. S.,
St. Marys, with the exercise class starting at 11a.m., she said.
“We will be
celebrating our wonderful country,” said Pauline White, Senior Services
Wellness Coordinator for the Town of St. Marys.
“However, I truly
feel that not only are we celebrating our country but all the efforts of the
participants to be healthy and improve their quality of life as well as the
leaders who work so hard to offer an amazing program day after day,” she added.
A bit of history
with the exercise idea regarding the event:
The South West Local Health Integration
Network started a falls prevention strategy targeting seniors to keep them
out of emergencies/hospitals rooms due to falls several years ago.
Several agencies deliver free exercise falls
prevention classes to seniors over the South West LHIN area as part of that
strategy.
The
Town of St Marys Home Support Services is one of those agencies and works
within a collaborative effort with One Care, Mitchell Community Outreach, Milverton
Community Outreach, Bluewater Community Connections and Victorian Order of Nurses,
covering a variety of services in the Perth Huron and Stratford areas.
Wellness for
Seniors provides older adults with community-based programs and self-management
tools to help prevent and manage chronic conditions, while enhancing overall
health.
If anyone is interested
in participating in the event, please register in advance by calling the Friendship
Centre 519-284-3272. TownofStMarys.com
