Da
Mao, Canada’s only male giant panda, celebrated his seventh birthday
today (Sept. 1) with much fan-fare. The Toronto Zoo's very artistic keeping
team created the special Out of This World themed enrichment items which were filled with some of his favourite treats including apples, leaf eater biscuits and bamboo!
In
honour of this special day visitors enjoyed some panda themed birthday
activities at the Giant Panda Exhibit, including arts and crafts and
making a conservation pledge on how they could help save the world's
species. Visitors were also encouraged to drop off birthday cards for
our furry, bamboo loving friend! Da Mao, the giant panda mascot,
was also on hand for a fun birthday themed photo op!
Da
Mao and Er Shun are at the Toronto Zoo as part of a Giant Panda
Conservation Breeding Program. The giant panda is listed as endangered
in the World Conservation Union's (IUCN's) Red List of Threatened
Animals.
