Meet our new tour guide, Astri!
Astri has been a nature nut for as long as
she can remember. In fact, as a child she formed a club whose primary
goal was to educate her classmates on the role bees play in the
pollination process and why killing them indiscriminately is wrong. When
Astri began studying at Wilfrid Laurier University, she had intended to
major in business or political science, however, she didn’t enjoy those
classes as much as those in the environmental sciences. She switched
her focus and also took a summer job as a tree planter, which she
continued for 5 summers, planting forests in Northern Ontario, B.C. and
Alberta. Astri later began her Master of Environment and Sustainability
at the University of Saskatchewan, travelling to Sweden for the summer
of 2013 to study the adaptive capacity of Swedish reindeer herding
communities. Having relocated to Essex County, Astri felt unfulfilled by
the employment opportunities she found in the city, and jumped at the
chance to have a new adventure on Pelee Island. This summer marks her
first visit to the island, and she has loved every minute of it! Sharing
knowledge about the natural and human history of the island has been a
blast, and it helps that she loves the sound of her own voice.
Meet our new tour guide, Vince!
Explore Pelee welcomes Vincent! He was born
in the Philippines and moved to Canada when he was just 7 years old. His
interest in the wilderness started when he was younger, and it led him
to study biology and zoology at the University of Guelph. He assisted
researchers with Operation Wallacea during his studies and visited
Honduras and South Africa. After graduation he worked in the
Philippines and then decided to go back to South Africa to train and
work as a FGASA field guide. He trained with the Bushwise and interned
at Nkambeni Lodge which ran tours inside Kruger National Park. He has
experience viewing the dangerous animals, using larger caliber rifles,
off-road driving, and tracking animals. He came to Pelee Island for the
new experiences and adventures. He hopes to absorb as much knowledge of
Pelee Island as he can from the Explore Pelee team and become one of the
regulars on the island!
