Anthony got the part, but Jonathan died suddenly the night before the musical’s off-Broadway premiere.

This is where Without You begins.  Rapp shares his experience of being a part of Rent – his audition, the casting process, rehearsals and his view from the stage during the tribute performance on the night after Jonathan’s tragic death. 

Without You also details Anthony’s achingly beautiful relationship with his mother during this turbulent time.    Rock ‘n’ roll holidays

   Blue Christmas recorded by Elvis Presley in 1957 became a rock holiday classic that is amazing recreated by tribute artist Stephen Kabakos.

   This Elvis look-alike, who sounds and moves like “the King of Rock and Roll,” performs his holiday show on Dec. 17 at Stage West Theatre Restaurant in Mississauga.

   The show, which includes the lavish buffet in the Vegas-style showroom, has Kabakos and his TVB (The Very Best) Ensemble performing Christmas favourites and other songs from the Elvis repertoire.

   He recreates an authentic Elvis experience “note for note, song for song and word for word,” said publicist Laurie Wallace-Lynch.

   Kabakos will be back on Jan. 28 with his Aloha to Hawaii tribute and on Feb. 25 for the Elvis 68 Comeback Special.

   There are many more Elvis sightings with the Cavalcade of Champions on Jan. 7 hosted by Nevin Grant, CKOC radio legend and music historian.

   It features Anthony Von, Gino Monopoli and Anthony Carbone and seven other tribute artists.

European-style Christmas holiday markets recreate early traditions

   A seasonal European tradition dating back 700 years has been recreated in Toronto and Kitchener.

   Christmas markets have been a popular annual treat for centuries across Germany, Austria and other parts of Europe.

Old-fashioned Kris Kringle arrives on a white horse at the Distillery District’s Toronto Christmas Market.

   They are a feast for the senses as families gather to view and buy gifts and enjoy entertainment, festive activities and decorations.

   Sights, sounds and smells

   The “Old World” has come to Toronto’s Distillery Historic District (55 Mill St.) now through Dec. 16.

   Known as the Lowe’s Toronto Christmas Market, about 200,000 people will “experience the grandeur, sights and sounds” of this traditional European custom, said Mathew Rosenblatt, one of the event’s creators.

   An abundance of European-style baked goods is offered at the Toronto Christmas Market.

Cities in the Sand: 38th annual SSEA presents Urban Life in Ancient Egypt at the ROM

Toronto, Ontario – The Friends of Ancient Egypt at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities (SSEA) have partnered once again to present Cities In The Sand, the 38th Annual Symposium featuring the latest academic discoveries from Egypt, with a specific focus on urban life in ancient Egypt.

As part of this event, Egyptologists working directly in the field in Egypt along with other academics are presenting papers on life in towns and cities along the Nile from various periods throughout the country’s long history. Cities in the Sand presentations take place Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 9am to 5pm at the ROM’s Signy & Cléophée Eaton Theatre.

Barrie resort enjoying an early ski season due to better than expected snowmaking conditions

HORSESHOE RESORT SET TO OPEN 50^TH SKI SEASON THIS WEEKEND

BARRIE, ONTARIO, November 29, 2012 – Horseshoe, a Skyline Resort in Barrie, Ontario is kicking off their 50^th ski season this weekend with an unexpected early opening this Saturday, December 1. Two ski runs, Ponytail and Steeplechase, will be open along with 15 km of groomed Nordic trails and 10 km of snowshoe trails.

Metro Detroit offers incentives for Canadians to stay, shop and save

   Eat, shop, stay, play – and start over again.

   That sums up our recent visit to the “Motor City,” otherwise known as Metro Detroit.

   The downtown renewal continues with many new restaurants and bars, “pop-up” shops, hotels, three glitzy casinos and the streets decorated for the “festive” season.

   Last weekend it was all about shopping in the midst of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday when Canadians join in with their U.S. neighbours.

   Stay, shop, save

   There’s a special incentive to visit this season, said Renee Monforton, public relations director at the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.

   Ontario residents can book a room at a Metro Detroit hotel before Dec. 31, register online and get a $50 VISA gift card in return.

   Other incentives are that Detroit is nearby with border crossings at Sarnia and Windsor, there’s a stronger Canadian dollar and lower sales tax at 6 per cent in Michigan (8.5 per cent in Buffalo, N.Y.).

   “We believe that once they experience the plentiful shopping options, variety of hotel accommodations and world-class attractions and restaurants greater Detroit has to offer, they’ll return again and again,” said Larry Alexander, bureau president and CEO.

   For the overnight stay, Canadians can return with $200 in duty-free goods and $800 each for 48 hours and longer (but there’s no “official” exemption of duty or taxes on same-day trips).
