Kick-off October 14 with award-winning line-up of Canadian musicians
Stratford, ON – String Bone Presents! announces the talent line-up for the second season of the Live at Revival House concert series in Stratford, Ontario. Curated
and directed by Canadian singer-songwriter Barry James Payne (aka
String Bone), who also performs with the Celtic-fusion band Rant Maggie
Rant, the concert series features a dynamic line-up of award-winning
Canadian musicians.
“We saw such a positive
reaction to the first year of our concert series and I couldn’t be more
thrilled for the music we have planned for this season,” explained
Barry James Payne. “Revival House is fast becoming a roots music fan’s
mecca in southern Ontario. Last year, we had concert-goers from as far
away as Ottawa and Peterborough, and many from Toronto/GTA, as well as
communities closer to home, such as London, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph,
Sarnia and Windsor. Also, we have partnered with some great local
accommodations to offer affordable overnight stays.”
The 2016-2017 concert dates and artists as follows:
October 14, 2016 – Gregory Hoskins
Gregory Hoskins'
career spans 26 years and 14 albums with recording contracts in Canada,
the United States, Germany and Asia. He has appeared on stage or in
studio with Kevin Breit, Hawksley Workman, The Henrys, Rickie Lee Jones,
Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, Serena Ryder, The Art of Time
Ensemble, Bruce Cockburn, Sarah McLachlan, and The Neville Brothers, to
name a few. He brings to Revival House songs from his brand new
recording, entitled Vain + Alone. “Gregory’s lyrics are real and
bittersweet, arrangements are nimble, and the overall effect evokes a
rum-based half dream involving Paul Simon, Joe Henry and truth,” says
Brad Wheeler of The Globe and Mail.
October 28, 2016 – Steve Poltz
Steve Poltz
is a road-tested troubadour armed with whimsy, curiosity and a healthy
respect for the absurdities of existence. His songs are guileless
snapshots filtered through the windshield of his brain. He opens his
mouth and lets it fall out – a SONG – and it is as shameless and
intriguing and profound and wondrous as he is. A mix of high octane
performance, singular wit and endlessly entertaining storytelling, Steve
is legendary for his improvisational song-writing and timeless,
original classics, such as Jewel's “You Were Meant For Me.” Yes, he
co-wrote that one! And, he is a pretty good guitarist too.
November 5, 2016 – Séan McCann
Great big singer Séan McCann is widely known as a member of the internationally-renowned band Great Big Sea.
He has spent the last 20 years travelling the world enamouring
audiences from Copenhagen to California with his love for Newfoundland
and Labrador folk songs. After millions of albums sales, countless hit
songs, and record breaking tours around the world, Séan realized it was
time to part company with the band. In 2013, he stopped touring with Great Big Sea to strike out on his own.
November 18, 2016 – Fred Eaglesmith
A songwriter’s songwriter, Fred Eaglesmith
has a depth that is informed by miles of experience as a true road dog.
He is not only the star of the show, but also the bus driver and chief
mechanic while on tour, keeping him and his band on the road. Unlike
many of today’s artists, touring is not something he does some of the
time or only in support of a new record. Touring is his life and The
Fred Eaglesmith Travelling Steam Show is one of the last full-time
travelling shows today. Their busy itinerary added up to more than 270
days on the road last year and saw Fred only returning home long enough
to play a handful of local shows and to go into the studio to record a
new album.
January 27, 2017 – Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar
Bubbling up from the cauldron of roots Americana music, roots ‘n roll Samantha Martin
is an artist of extraordinary power, gravitas and deep-seated emotion.
As a vocalist, one is immediately struck by the awesome presence and
sheer magnitude of her other worldly voice. Cigarette-ravaged and
whiskey-soaked in the extreme, Martin’s pipes are capable of conveying
an infinite range of emotions, bringing one to tears in one instance and
in the next uplifting one’s soul with an empowered declaration of hope,
faith and desire. As a songwriter, she draws on black gospel and
southern soul with a hint of roots country and sixties pop, while her
lyrics suggest an old soul with wisdom beyond her years.
February 24, 2017 – Alysha Brilla
Alysha Brilla
is an Indo-Tanzanian-Canadian, Juno-nominated singer, songwriter,
producer, yoga instructor, part-time clothing designer and social
justice advocate. The
multi-talented artist plays guitar, piano and djembe, creating a unique
original soul-folk sound which has been featured on stages
internationally, including the Montreal International Jazz Festival and
L.A. Angel City Music Festival. In 2010, she was signed to Lava
Records/Universal Republic and is now independent and runs her own music
label, Sunny Jam Records Inc. She has released three self-produced
studio albums on the latter label, including Womyn (2015, Juno Award nominated) and In My Head (2014, Juno Award nominated). Her music has been featured on major network television shows, such as King and Degrassi; The Next Generation.
March 24, 2017 – The Small Glories
The Small Glories
comprise Cara Luft & JD Edwards, a dynamic new duo planted on the
Canadian prairies. These two veteran singer-songwriters are creating a
buzz around their tight harmonies, authenticity and visceral
performances. Luft is a Juno Award-winner and
co-founder of the folk trio The Wailin’ Jennys. She has earned a solid
reputation as an exciting live performer, accomplished guitarist, claw
hammer banjo player and an insightfully honest songwriter. Whereas,
Edwards has a voice that defies categorization: one that easily ranges
from gentle and melodic to fierce and powerful, leaving listeners
begging for more.
April 7, 2017 – Craig Cardiff
During his shows, Craig Cardiff passes around a Book of Truths and asks his fans to share something truthful in it –
a story, confession, a hope or secret. The book gives fans an
opportunity to write down something they might be too afraid to express
and, in turn, it gives Cardiff the chance to connect with his audience.
It is Craig’s soft vocal demure that tells the story and the melody that
keeps you hooked. Over the years, he has played with and opened for
critically-acclaimed artists Sarah Harmer, Kathleen Edwards, Blue Rodeo,
Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip, Hawksley Workman, Sarah Slean and
the Skydiggers.

From Ithaca, New York, Joe Crookson
is fierce, creative and funny as hell. With his ‘48 Gibson, slide
guitar, fiddle and an unwavering commitment to his art, Joe connects
with his audience every time. Joe’s credentials include 2016 Artist in
Residence at the Folk Alliance International Conference; Rockefeller
grant recipient; featured in the documentary film, entitled Blue Tattoo; and his songs are included in the new edition of the Rise Again songbook, as well as the upcoming film Brooklyn in July.
The Young Novelists
are the Toronto-based, husband-and-wife duo of Graydon James and Laura
Spink. Trading witty stories and bittersweet songs with harmonies
reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel and The Civil Wars, the twosome’s
brand of "beautiful, soaring, rootsy Canadiana" has been connecting with
audiences across Canada, the United States and Europe. Their sophomore
album, entitled made us strangers, earned the band the
New-Emerging Artist Award at the 2015 Canadian Folk Music Awards. The
band is currently hard at work on their next album inspired by small
towns across Ontario.
May 19, 2017 - Digging Roots
Back by popular demand! The concert series concludes with the amazing Digging Roots.
The Juno Award-winning Canadian folk-roots duo of Raven Kanetakta and
ShoShona Kish and their seven-piece band blew the roof off of Revival
House at last year’s concert series. This is the first artist String
Bone Presents! has presented that has received a standing ovation in the
middle of their set. This husband-and-wife song-writing team’s music is
rich with the sounds of their Indigenous roots, singing in both Anishinabemowin and English. Their
beautiful blend includes folk-rock, pop, blues and hip-hop influences.
They are exotic, erotic, hypnotic, topical, political and spiritual.
Revival House, formerly the Church Restaurant, is
one of Stratford’s most iconic buildings. A former Baptist
church-turned-fine dining restaurant, Revival House is co-owned and
operated by Stratford native Rob Wigan and his wife Candice Wigan. The
1,676-square-metre property was gutted in the spring of 2014 and its
majestic interior transformed into a “smart casual” restaurant and
lounge with an expansive kitchen that embraces the local farm to table
concept. Revival House was recently featured in enRoute, Air Canada’s inflight travel magazine.
