One-Tank Trip
for Oct. 13/18
By Jim Fox
Last weekend marked
the unofficial end of cottage season, with the water shut off, windows boarded
up and the water toys and Muskoka chairs safety stored away for the winter.
But these days,
cottages are becoming retirement favourites and used year-round by others with
amenities sometimes better than in the city.
This makes the Fall
Cottage Life Show ranking right up there with the spring version for people
looking for winter projects and advice on the great Canadian dream of cottage
ownership.
The fall show, from
Oct. 19 to 21 at the International Centre in Mississauga, highlights interesting
items, gadgets, gizmos and advice from 225 exhibitors.
Carpenter
Wayne Lennox will show how to build an ice-fishing hut that doubles as a bunkie
or playshed in the summer, said publicist Kate Calder.
There’s a model
cottage to inspect and an artisan doing chainsaw art as well, she added.

outdoor equipment, along with cottage country realtors, building experts,
eco-energy suppliers and more.
Another
growing trend is renting, with CanadaStays providing “crucial info for people
who are thinking of putting their cottage on the rental market.”
The show is said to
“celebrate the special connection people have to the distinct lakes, regions
and towns in cottage country.”

Ontario for a new documentary series called Great Canadian Cottages.
They’ll be at the
show on the Saturday and Sunday to talk about their visits to 25 “really
unique” cottages over eight episodes to premiere on Oct. 18 at 10 p.m.
Bonneville Homes will be showing the Alti with an upstairs module in its Micro-Lofts Series at the cottage show. |
Among the stage
presentations are contracting advice from Beaver Homes & Cottages; caring
for cottage trees with arborist Matt Logan; and saving taxes and protecting the
family cottage financially with Peter Lillico.
Cooking
demonstrations will cover making easy cottage snacks and meals with Tony
Armstrong from Headwater Farms.
The Dock Party
offers food and beverages to sample including premium beer from Muskoka Brewery,
with the sales to benefit the Cottage Dreams Cancer Recovery Initiative.
