STRATFORD – Stratford can expect sightings of
unique creatures soon.
Puppets of every shape, size and colour
hit the streets for the second annual PuppetWorks! mini-fest (July 12-14, 2019)
brought to Stratford by SpringWorks Festivals.
Market Square and City Hall will be the main venues for the
festival, with shows for children, families and adults. You may also get
pleasantly surprised by an impromptu puppet appearance or busking performance
around the downtown.
Six different puppet troupes and three strolling street
performance troupes comprise the puppet excitement ready to hit the Festival
City.

“Puppets speak an international language, even when they are
saying nothing at all,” says SpringWorks Artistic Director, Eileen Smith. “There
is something about the art of puppetry that can communicate so well the
spectrum of human stories, be they sad, dramatic, funny or whimsical.”
SpringWorks is deeply committed to sharing this ancient
artform with Stratford audiences and has made all performances “Pay What You
Choose” to facilitate maximum attendance. Puppet fans are encouraged to book a
seat online.
On the weekend, arrive early to
see what seats are available. If the first showing of your choice is full, you
can book at the box office, on site, for the next one.

At City Hall:
Puzzle Theatre/ Théâtre Puzzle (Bulgaria/Montreal) – Plastique/Plastic
introduces plastic bag creatures that are born and transform into funny and
colourful creatures.
Le Théâtre des Petites Âmes (Small Souls)(Montreal) –
Puppeteer, Isabelle Payant, presents Pekka, the gentle story of a tiny brave
turtle who engages 2 to 5-year-olds to travel the world with her, looking for
Miss Moon.
Three different collections of Puppet Short Films brought to
us by Handmade Puppet Dreams and the famous Henson dynasty, sponsored by Edward
Daranyi (2 family shows, last screening rated PG12)
In the Market Square Performance Tent:
In Norwegian Tales, Sarah Granskou (Kitchener), leads us on
a lyrical journey into Norwegian folk and local forest lore with trolls, pet dragons,
their felted puppet friends, poetic stories and music.
The Udder Show features late night talk show host, David
Udderman, the cow, as he interviews Creatureville’s alpacas, chickens and other
special guests!
Rock the Arts (Ottawa)
Toronto Humber College Artist’s Puppet School – A Bit of
Everything provides a fascinating and funny introductory crash course in the
art of puppetry.
Eclectic CABARET – introduces the “Puppet SLAM” - a
collection of short puppet works brought to life by our travelling puppeteers
with musical moments from some of our favourite SpringWorks’ artist-friends
(PG13).

Les Panachés’ Shake la Catin and Shake le Costume (Montreal)–
Friday and Saturday evening
‘Electric’ body and large-scale puppets will light
up the square with dancing energy
Les Chasseurs de Rêves (Montreal) – Les Oiseaux, bring their
street magic, á la Cirque du Soleil, to the streets of Stratford during the day
Saturday and Sunday
The Udder Show “on the hoof” will be out and about
interviewing folks on the street and local shopkeepers
Le Théâtre des Petites Âmes (Small Souls) (Montreal)-
Puppet gardeners invite Little Ones from 2 to 6 to touch, feel and
discover in their puppet garden.
On Friday and Saturday nights, Sip & Shop Night Markets
will provide a wonderful selection of artisanal vendors in Market Square adding
to the mini-fest’s fun.
Black Swan Brewery will host the Beer and Beverage Garden-
in the middle of the Market Square for sitting, sipping a local brew and
puppet-watching!

SpringWorks is a Stratford-based multidisciplinary, indie
theatre and arts, charitable organization that presents a variety of NEW works
in all stages of development in the disciplines of theatre, music, dance,
puppetry, and cross-cultural & exploratory theatre forms throughout the
year, under the direction of Artistic Producer Eileen Smith.
