Toronto Zoo Weekly Feature - Thursday, 2014-02-06
February is Polar Bear Month at the
Toronto Zoo. During February visitors will have a chance to see, first
hand, the important work we do in saving and protecting polar bears and
their environment. Join us for Polar Bear Fest February 15th to 17th and
move your paws in support of the polar bears at our new walk/run event
on February 22nd. While on site you can visit our polar bear family-
Aurora and Nikita- and learn about how you can help protect them and
their habitats.
Saving species
requires support from not only our visitors but special partners
including Polar Bears International and Acres for Atmosphere. Toronto
Zoo has been a proud partner of Polar Bears International (PBI) for
almost seven years and zoo. Staff regularly attend the annual Leadership
Camp where they work directly in the field and are able to bring back
knowledge that we can not only apply to our existing action plans but
also educate staff, volunteers, visitors and school groups. Another
partnered program, Acres for the Atmosphere, is
a zookeeper initiated program created to raise awareness of the need
for immediate action to help protect not only the polar bear but all
species who are affected by CO2. The programs goals are to increase
carbon sequestration by greening areas with vegetative plants or trees
within your local community, decrease CO2 emissions and raise community
awareness and instill a sense of pride and ownership to help inspire
others to join the motion.
Your local Acres for
the Atmosphere team has had great success thanks to their sponsoring
company and team member Symcor. With everyone's hard work and dedication
the Toronto branch of Acres for the Atmosphere completed their fourth
planting on the Toronto Zoo site. This brings the total number of trees
and plants that now call your community home to an amazing 2,376!
