Harbourfront Centre brings the heat with the Hot & Spicy Food Festival (August 15 to 17)

(News Release)

TORONTO, ON Hot & Spicy Food Festival, the steamiest festival at Harbourfront Centre, returns August 15–17 (2014) with fiery food, hot beats and a smorgasbord of workshops, spicy samplings and interactive experiences.

The 17th installment of the Hot & Spicy Food Festival dips into food and culture rooted in the past, and explores how it’s evolved in present-day kitchens. From the modest chili comes an evolution of sensations from chefs whose backgrounds span the globe, from Mexico, the Philippines, India and beyond.

Visitors will have the opportunity to create their own Spice Route Passport, enjoy the melodic offerings of Lindy Vopnfjörd and Jimmie’s Habanero, and find out what it takes to be an Iron Chef in the International Iron Chef Competition.

“Harbourfront Centre’s Big Idea in 2014 is Legacy, and that is mirrored in the curation of Hot & Spicy. We look at legacy as not something merely frozen in time, but rather a continuous process of renewal that is engrained in tradition and also constantly transforming,” shares artistic associate, Annette Paiment. “We will explore environmentally transformed traditional cuisine, for example, beef chili, which is a spicier Indian adaptation of an original Hakka Chinese dish. Top chefs will come together to share recipes and stories of how traditionally rooted culinary wisdom has informed a renewed international infusion of ingredients and flavours.”

It wouldn’t be the Hot & Spicy Food Festival without tastes that tempt even the most discerning of palettes. For the Love of Spice demonstrations will feature top chefs like Chef Steve Gonzalez of Valdez and Chef Deb Rankine of The Fridge Whisperer, who will showcase how they make some of their favourite dishes, from Peruvian Chupe to Moroccan Mint Tea Ice Cream. The Fiery Food Challenge takes the audience on a hot and spicy trip around the world as competing chefs present the very best, heat-seeking dishes from their cultures.
The adventures continue with Hot & Spicy Food Festival workshops. Learn how to grow your own sprouts during Sensational Sprouts, discover the healing powers of root vegetables with Root Remedies, and learn from Carol Marks how to keep your cool while hosting a cocktail party at The Art of Throwing a Sizzling Hot Cocktail Party. Adults can also partake in a DIY Aphrodisiac workshop where they will learn how to make titillating treats.

The menu this weekend also serves up treats for your ears with a global array of sweet beats and zesty sounds. The Hot & Spicy Food Festival soundtrack includes live performances from Moroccan-born singer-songwriter and oud master HassanElHadi, Canadian R&B/funk outfit Crack of Dawn, the 2014 SoundClash Music Award winner and more.
