International award-winning Sandcastle Festival returns to Cobourg

(News Release)

Festival welcomes world champion sand sculptor, Lego® mobile tour and much more.

(Cobourg, ON) July 2, 2013 – Cobourg Tourism is gearing up for its 8th annual Cobourg
Sandcastle Festival, an international award winning event situated on the shores of Lake
Ontario during the August long weekend.

Each year the Sandcastle Festival draws both a national and international crowd that plays host
to a packed beach full of residents and tourists, a live DJ, a movie at dusk, scavenger hunts, an
activity tent for kids, sand sculpting lessons, a Family Fun Zone and much more.

"The Sandcastle Festival certainly draws a terrific crowd of tourists and residents to our beach
who are not only there to cheer on their favourite sculptors but to participate in the fun,” said
Mayor Gil Brocanier for the Town of Cobourg. “If you’re going to attend any festival this year I’d
certainly recommend this one!”
This year Cobourg welcomes nine master sculptors hailing from all over the province who are
ready to wow the crowd with their sand sculpting skills. These master sculptors are
internationally recognized winning titles for the World Champion Sand Sculpting, North
American Sand Sculpting and participating in hundreds of events with works of art displayed on
local and worldwide beaches.

Open to aspiring artists of every skill level, last year’s festival had 66 amateur teams competing
and is designed to encourage everyone to participate including businesses, youth, adult and
families. Interested sculptors can register online at cobourgtourism.ca/sandcastle until August 1
or onsite at the registration table on Saturday, August 4 at 9 a.m.

All sculptors are asked to pay a small fee and have a chance to win cash prizes within each category and the coveted event title.

Sculptors are given a team flag and a 20’ x 20’ space to design within. Using only the existing
sand and water the competition will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. with an awards
ceremony held shortly after at 4 p.m. at the Centre Gazebo.

New to the festival this year is the Lego® Summer Playcation mobile tour. The Playcation
themed trailer will open up to reveal a camp motif complete with a 16’ x 16’ interactive play area
offering an interactive experience for both kids and parents.

The entire weekend is an open celebration with a live DJ on the beach, a scavenger hunt, the
New Amherst Activity Tent, sand sculpting lessons with four-time world champion Karen Fralich
and a Family Fun Zone that includes five giant inflatables and two giant slip and slides.

Wristbands for admission into the Family Fun Zone can be purchased for $5 at the registration
tent giving unlimited access to both the inflatables on the beach and in Downtown Cobourg
during the annual Sidewalk Sale from August 1-3.

The evening is set to end with a movie on the beach ‘Oz: The Great & Powerful’. The festival continues on Sunday, August 4 with master and amateur sculptures available for viewing all day long.

The Sandcastle Festival has been recognized for the third time as one of the most well-known and respected festivals and events within the province, Cobourg’s Sandcastle Festival placed among this year’s ‘Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario’ (FEO). The festival has also been internationally recognized, receiving the Pinnacle Award with the International Festival and Events Association.

The Sandcastle Festival is proudly sponsored by New Amherst, Boston Pizza and both Star 93.3 FM and The Breeze 107.9 FM.
