The Toronto Zoo's Top 14 Success Stories of 2014
1) It's A Girl! Female Western lowland gorilla born January 10th.
2) Bob the Sloth Superstar -
Bob the two-toed sloth garners international media attention with his
accurate prediction of the winner of the 2014 FIFA World Cup™.
3) FIRST Canadian Burmese Star Tortoise Hatched!
After an extensively monitored 135 day incubation period, a Burmese
star tortoise hatched on June 6. This was the first hatching of a
Burmese star tortoise in Canada.
4) Blanding's Turtles Reintroduced to the Wild for FIRST TIME - Toronto Zoo,
Parks Canada, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and
Earth Rangers, reintroduced 10 baby Blanding's turtles - a provincially
and nationally threatened species - to a pond in the future Rouge
National Urban Park marking the first reintroduction of its kind in the
Greater Toronto Area and marking a significant step in 15 years of
turtle monitoring and research in the Rouge Valley.
5) Toronto Zoo receives LARGEST Single Donation! $2
million donation to Toronto Zoo from the estate of Mary Millard making
it the single largest donation in the Zoo’s 40 year history.
6) NEW Wildlife Health Centre - New
state of the art Wildlife Health Centre to begin construction after
approvals given by Toronto Zoo Board of Management and Toronto City
Council.
7) CUTE ALERT!
Two bison calves, were successfully born through artificial
insemination on July 2, 2014 and July 5, 2014. This is the fourth
consecutive year that the Toronto Zoo has had wood bison calves born
through artificial insemination, as part of an ongoing research program
with our collaborators at the University of Saskatchewan and Parks
Canada.
8) Canadian Pride - Parks
Canada and Toronto Zoo team up special March Break activities to
educate visitors on how they are working together to help save many
native Canadian species, and how visitors can contribute to the
protection and recovery of these animals and their habitats.
9) Massasauga Success! Three
massasauga rattlesnakes born on Wednesday, June 11, 2014. The three
massasauga rattlesnakes joined the current managed population of
massasauga's at the Toronto Zoo and may contribute their valuable
genetic lineage to enhance the health of other assurance populations.
The Zoo’s massasauga rattlesnakes are part of a Species Survival Plan
(SSP) conservation and breeding program that began in 2006 as a result
of concerns over the decline of the massasauga rattlesnake population in
Canada and in the United States where it is listed as Endangered,
Threatened or Special Concern.
10) Microsoft Canada Software Donation - Microsoft Canada donates $2 million in software to support of Engaging Youth in Conservation.
11) Zoo Staff Make Rare Find In Madagascar! Toronto
Zoo Wildlife Care Keeper has another successful field season in
Madagascar working with Malagasy partners on an important fisheries
conservation project to establish sustainable populations of endangered
fish in the wild. This is the fourth field season to study freshwater
fishes as a joint venture between Malagasy partners, Zoological Society
of London and Dr. Paul Loiselle, Emeritus Curator of Freshwater Fishes,
New York Aquarium. The Toronto Zoo has been part of a conservation
program for Madagascar fishes since 2004. The extremely rare Ptychochromis insolitus,
a small perch-like fish, was a main focus this year. Originally thought
to be extinct, this fish was collected during the 2013 field season and
was confirmed by Tim, this year, to be breeding in a protected
Madagascar conservation facility.
12) 40 Days of 40 Animals! Leading up to the Zoo’s 40th
anniversary celebrations on August 15, 2014, the Toronto Zoo hosted a
40 days of 40 animals countdown to highlight 40 unique species and the
work the Zoo is doing to contribute to their ongoing survival.
13) MOON FESTIVAL GALA -
Toronto Zoo Board of Management and Consul General for the People’s
Republic of China in Toronto co-host Moon Festival Gala sponsored by RBC
Financial, Manulife and Chinese Fujian Enterprise Association to
benefit the Giant Panda Conservation Fund.
14) NEW FUNDRAISER - Toronto Zoo hosts a new fundraiser with Canada Running Series – Move your Paws for the Polar Bear Cause to raise money for polar bear conservation.
