Stratford, ON (January 7, 2014) – The International Symphony Orchestra welcomes back award-winning Rant Maggie Rant for a captivating celebration of Celtic music on Friday, January 17 at the Imperial Theatre in Sarnia, followed by a repeat performance on Saturday, January 18 at McMorran Place in Port Huron, Michigan.

Both performances start at 7:30 pm. Taking the podium for these two concerts is conductor Douglas Bianchi, a native of Windsor.

When these two distinctively different worlds come together – Celtic and classical – it is philharmonic splendour. Collaborating with a symphony orchestra is a favourite tradition of Rant Maggie Rant, who has previously performed with the International Symphony Orchestra, Stratford Symphony Orchestra and the Georgian Bay Symphony.

Entitled Shamrocks and Thistles, the concert features collaborative works, traditional tunes mischievously coloured outside the prescribed lines, well-known favourites and several original compositions, including:

·        Charles Standford’s Irish Rhapsody for orchestra, No. 1 in D minor, Opus 78.
·        Selections from Jay Lerner’s and Frederick Loewe’s musical Brigadoon.
·        “Winter's Flower,” an original fantasy on Three Celtic Themes (2009) arranged by composer and pianist Kevin Lau for Celtic band and orchestra.
·        “Songs of the Cape” by Canadian composer Scott MacMillan.
·        Frederic Weatherly’s classic “Danny Boy.”

As well, there will be dynamic Celtic dancers and Highland pipers and pipe band drummers.
to add to the foot stompin’ enjoyment.

Based in Stratford, Ontario, Rant Maggie Rant has been delighting the most discriminating Celtic connoisseur with their joyful explosion of sound since 2008. The ensemble is loved by traditionalists, who enjoy their time-honoured approach and style, while listeners of other musical genres are drawn to the band's fusion of punchy roots/blues/rock guitar and the syncopated World influences of hand drumming spiced with Latin, Middle Eastern and African rhythms.

Rant Maggie Rant showcases the talents of Lindsay Schindler (fiddle, background vocals), Glen Dias (lead vocals, recorders, percussion) and Barry James Payne (guitars, harmonica, background vocals) with special guests. Biographical information at: www.rantmaggierant.com. Joining them will be guest musicians Rob Larose (drums, percussion), Steve Clark (electric and upright bass) and Dave Nuttall (Irish whistles and wind instruments).

In 2013, Rant Maggie Rant took home hardware at the Jack Richardson Music Awards gala. The band received a Jack Richardson Music Award in the Traditional Folk/Roots category. The awards recognize musical excellence in the City of London, Ontario, where all of the members of the band have London connections, and continue to contribute to the vibrant music scene in that city.

The band has covered a lot of ground over the last two years performing throughout Newfoundland, on Canada’s west coast, in Quebec and south of the border in Chicago, Illinois and Saline, Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Michigan and many venues in between. In 2014, the band is scheduled to play at Ottawa’s National Arts Centre and their fourth annual and perennially sold out St. Paddy's show at Toronto's prestigious folk-roots venue Hugh's Room, where their latest CD was recorded.

Rant Maggie Rant has three CDs available: self-titled (2013), Frost & Fire: A Celtic Christmas Celebration (2011) and World’s Edge (2009).
